Our Story

As qualified teachers working within schools we have recognised a need to support children with Social Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Often these children benefit from the opportunity to ‘reset’ outside of the classroom environment and this can be difficult for schools to offer within the school day. We have seen that Therapeutic Forest School is able to equip children with skills which can be used and developed within the classroom.

When not at work I am drawn to being outside in nature, loving nothing more than stomping through woodlands or getting my hands into the earth!  Even when inside I have a habit of filling my spaces with plants and flowers!

It is now well recognised that being outside has a multitude of benefits for mental health and wellbeing.  As a mum and an experienced teacher of over 25 years I have seen this reflected in children and have noticed how those who may struggle within the classroom can thrive once outside.

I was fortunate enough to work in a school which placed an emphasis on Forest School and I completed my Level 3 Forest School training.  I have been able to run Forest School sessions for primary classes across the age ranges within my schools, and more recently have worked within an Alternative Provision setting.

It was this work, where I was supporting children who had a trauma profile, that the huge benefit of forest school on vulnerable children became apparent.  As a result in 2023 I completed my Therapeutic Forest School training and decided to set up The Grounded Forest with Catherine.

I am passionate about outdoor learning and trained to be a Forest schools teacher in 2009. More recently I’ve completed my certificate in Therapeutic Skills for outdoor learning. I currently work part time as a Year 2 teacher where I provide weekly Forest schools sessions.

I have worked with local schools to support and advise on early years outdoor learning and supporting children with SEMH needs.

I am a mum of twin girls, who like me are both dyslexic. From my personal experience of dyslexia and years of supporting children with a range of Special Educational needs, I have a special interest in supporting children’s holistic development through engaging child led learning.
